Cricket World Cup starts in West Indies

Monday, March 12th, 2007

The cricket world cup has kicked off in the West Indies - 47 days of cricketing excellence to enjoy. If you don’t know much about cricket then the world cup is an ideal place to start, because it is the limited-overs version of cricket, so there will be no draws (though possibly a tie or two) and the whole action will be finished in a few hours. When you’re a real aficionado you can move on to test matches which last five days!

47 days does seem a bit too long for a sports tournament to last. Will the enthusiasm and excitement stay that long?

Teams:

Australia
Bangladesh
Bermuda
Canada
England
India
Ireland
Kenya
Netherlands
New Zealand
Pakistan
Scotland
South Africa
Sri Lanka
West Indies
Zimbabwe

Enjoy the tournament!

Skype - part of the internet that is not only English

Sunday, March 11th, 2007

I’m amazed at how the Skypecast is part of the internet where English doesn’t seem to be entirely prevalent. Looking at the list of current skypecasts, out of 20 skypecasts 13 are non English. And one of those in English is about immigration to the EU.

Rugby Six Nations - Wales were robbed

Sunday, March 11th, 2007

Wales were robbed of a draw against Italy. The referee told the players they had long enough left to kick to touch and then take the line out, so they did that (because they were going for the win) instead of kick a penalty which would have given them the draw.  And when the ball went out for the lineout, the referee blew for time. A blatant contradiction of what he had said to the players. If they had known that there wasn’t time they would have taken the 3 points.

The problem seems to be an unexpected result of introducing more than one referee - who is actually in charge of calling the time? Surely it is the ref on the pitch and if he has said there is x seconds left then there has to be.  It must now be made clear to officials that the ref is totally in control.

So what about Wales? What recompense can be made to them? They most definitely have had a draw stolen from them - and in sport careers and jobs depend on results.

Replay the match!

Skypecast and skype and conference calls!

Sunday, March 11th, 2007

We took the plunge and downloaded skype and wow, it works! Not only could we soon have a cheap conference call with several people (which was great until we realised we had nothing to have a conference call about) we also go involved in skypecasts. One advantage over normal phones is you can see what is going on, you have a whole computer screen full of info, which means it can be more user friendly than the phones I grew up with.

Skypecasts are like big chat rooms where people from all over the world are talking about all sorts of subjects. It’s stunningly simple. If I were you I would give it a go - it’s free to get skypecasting and meeting people from all over, so hop over to skype and have a looksee. (No pressure. If you don’t want to then by all means don’t).

Food on TV 2 - Giles Coren Times Food critic stars in advert for Bird’s Eye

Saturday, March 10th, 2007

The second surprise on TV this week was seeing Giles Coren, food critic of the Times fronting an advert for Bird’s Eye. I enjoy many of Coren’s articles and was horrified to see him as the face of a big bland food company. His columns stand for fresh, local, organic, sustainable food, small producers, knowing the name of the cow you are eating. However you cut it , advertising for Bird’s eye is a strange choice. Maybe he knows something we don’t.
Giles, let’s have an explanation! I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt, so what was your thinking?!
