I am addicted to Pinot Noir from Chile. The two I have been tasting are Cono Sur 2006 and Bio Bio Valley 2006. Thet are both under a fiver and yet have great depth of flavour and taste.
Cono Sur is the best, an earthy nose with mushrooms and hedgerows to tase. Bio Bio is fruitier, slightly sharper, still an exciting taste.
If you want to explore a new wine region get on to Chile!

Wine lovers everywhere, don’t forget to watch the Wine program on BBC2 (James and Oz big wine adventure) tonight. 8.30.

Did you watch the Oz and James wine show on BBC2 today? They obviously get on pretty well and it’s one of those programs where you think hang on, should the BBC licence fee really be funding an extended holiday in France? Oz got to see his brother and James admitted he was having a whizzo time. But the proof of the program is in the watching, and though like James I could complain I’ve learnt nothing about wine, I spend an interesting hour in the company of a couple of English eccentrics. So it can’t all be bad, though sending a complete wine novice to a high powered chateau for a tasting didn’t work on any level. A tentative thumbs up and we’ll see what happens when they enter Burgundy and drive up to Champagne.

Aroma: Lemons, straw, apples.
Taste: watery, countryside
This is a crisp sauvignon from New Zealand which suffers the usual price premium of NZ wine and whilst having a great and unusual aroma is watery and lacks a finish of any great note.

2001 Monbazillac 13,5%
Golden colour, honey, syrupy, sweet aftertaste. Very long finish. Hay meadows if you want to be all constable about it. Noble rot gives it the characteristics . A lovely dessert wine.
